Monkeypod is what happens when a James Beard-recognized chef — Peter Merriman, one of the founders of Hawai’i regional cuisine — decides to build the fun one: a big, loud, torch-lit room in Wailea where the farm-to-table sourcing is serious and nothing else is. It is the single most repeatable night out in South Maui.
The mai tai and the happy hour
Start with the famous thing: the Monkeypod Mai Tai, a proper old-school build finished with a cloud of honey-lilikoi foam that floats on top like meringue on a sunset. It is the most photographed drink on the island and — rarer — it deserves it. One is festive; two is a vacation decision.
The daily afternoon happy hour is the local cheat code: meaningful discounts on drinks, pizzas and appetizers in the same torch-lit room, no downgrade in scene. It fills fast — arrive at the open or put your name in and browse the shops — and it turns a splurge spot into a habit spot.
There is live music most days, usually solo slack-key or acoustic sets that sit under the conversation instead of over it. Between the torches, the crowd hum and the foam mustaches, the room does the vacation-feeling work for you.
